Subpanel Installation and Upgrades

A well-placed subpanel brings circuits closer to where the power is used and keeps your main panel organized and manageable.

Overview

What a subpanel does

A subpanel is a secondary distribution point fed from the main panel. Instead of running many long individual circuits back to the main service, a single feeder supplies the subpanel and the branch circuits are distributed locally. That usually means shorter runs, clearer organization, and easier future changes.

Whether a subpanel is the right answer depends on your existing service capacity, the distance involved, the loads you plan to add, and the construction of the building. Some homes benefit greatly; others are better served by different work. That determination is made during an on-site assessment.

Safety first

Subpanels require correct grounding and separation of grounded and grounding conductors. Incorrect subpanel wiring is a common and hazardous DIY mistake, and it is not always visible from the outside.

Spaces a subpanel can support

  • Detached or attached garages
  • Workshops and hobby spaces with tools and equipment
  • Home additions and converted spaces
  • Accessory dwelling units (ADUs)
  • Additional circuits when the main panel is full
  • More organized power distribution across the property

The process

How subpanel work generally proceeds

  1. 01

    Assess capacity

We look at your existing service and main panel to understand what is available to feed a subpanel.

  2. 02

    Plan the feeder

Routing, distance, conductor sizing, and protection are evaluated for the specific installation.

  3. 03

    Set the location

The subpanel is placed for practical access, clearance, and proximity to the circuits it will serve.

  4. 04

    Install and terminate

The feeder and subpanel are installed with correct grounding and neutral separation.

  5. 05

    Circuit build-out and labeling

Branch circuits are added, tested, and clearly labeled at the subpanel.
